About

Ordinary people have hobbies, but some people have life-devouring obsessions. By day I practice engineering, but after I get home, something awakes inside my mind which drives me to build strange things out of brass and oak that flicker and glow. Sit back and enjoy the view.

You might like this site. It includes a video showing the hand construction of vacuum tubes (triode).

    Hi,
I have a technical question that I was hoping you could help me with. I bought a small one watt tube amp that I am planning to use for headphones. LIke your radio it has no Power transformer only heater tubes. I was advised to use an isolation transformer for the reasons you outlined. As this is a vintage amp would the 115v level be better than 120v? Are hospital grade units better? How else could I make this unit safer? Some type of
fuse/breaker etc. I have a baby and never let her get to my equipment and always shut power off on all amps through a furman power conditioner. I also drain caps at a shut off. Thanks in advance. jason

You will get a longer lifetime from the tubes if you run it at a lower voltage. 110V nominal is a good value. What I use is a variac (a variable autotransformer) that is plugged into an isolation transformer. Hospital grade is probably overkill in your case.

If it has no fuse already then you could always consider adding one. That’s really only good for protection if something shorts inside–it could prevent a fire.
